 week of 12/3

English 6 green/gold

We will continue working with sentences this week.  The students will work on the 4 main types of sentences.  They will also learn about fragments and run on sentences. They will practice proofreading their own sentences.  They will have their vocabulary test on Thursday. They will have a test on sentences on Friday.

English 7 Gold

The students are learning to summarize a chapter in their Geography book.  The students are working on picking out only the main ideas and paraphrasing the chapter.  The completed summaries are going t both English and Geography.  The students will have a vocabulary test on Thursday. The new cards will be due on Monday.

Reading 8 gold

The students will finish their reflections of “A Christmas Carol” and start the web quest, “ A Dicken’s of a Party.” A web quest is an inquiry-oriented project using a central question that honestly needs answering.  Students are asked to understand, hypothesize or problem-solve an issue that confronts the real world and they face an authentic task. Students take on roles within a cooperative group, they must develop expertise on a particular aspect or perspective of the topic. The students will research and report to their group on different aspects of the Victorian period.  This project will take several weeks and the culminating activity will be a Party to celebrate Scrooge’s new outlook on life.  The students will plan the party and will need to come in the costume of their character and stay in character throughout the party. 

Reading 7 gold:

Students are reading “Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry.”  The students will have guided group discussions over the reading.  The students will also complete vocabulary activities, create a picture in their mind of a scene, and add a drawing to their journal.

 

Week of  10/29

English 6 green/gold:  The students will continue working on Verbs this week.  The week will start with Linking Verbs, Predicate Nouns, and Predicate Adjectives.  The students will work with Verb Tenses; the students will identify present and past tense verbs.  The students will also change the verb tenses in a writing assignment.  Vocabulary test is on Thursday and their new cards will be due on Monday.

English 7 gold:  The students will work on linking verbs and predicate words at the beginning of the week.  The students will also work on verb tenses.  They will identify present and past tense verbs in their own writing.  The students will write stories and a peer will read, identify and change the tense of the story.  Vocabulary test will be on Thursday and their new cards will be due on Monday.

Reading 8: Students will read and analyze a screenplay.  They will identify the elements of a screenplay and read it as a Readers Theater.  The students will read and analyze a literary legend.  The students will use a graphic organizer to focus on the main character.  The students will also compare the legend in written form to the same legend as a movie.

Reading 7: The students will read and analyze an autobiographical excerpt this week.  They will identify a sequence of events and write a summary of key events.  We will also work with Credibility of Sources and the difference between Historical fiction and autobiographies.

Electives:

Computers: Students will create a power point this week.  We will also continue with Keyboarding.

History Projects: Students will present their research projects.  The students will start new projects when they have presented.

English 6 Green/Gold: This week we will continue with verbs.  We will work with using verbs in their writing. The students will create comic strips using mental verbs. The students will write a paragraph using action and mental verbs.  They will also work with transitive and intransitive verbs.  They will learn to ask the questions whom or or what after action verbs.

English 7: The students will update their blogs with their writing assignment on using Active Verbs.  They will work with transitive verbs and intransitive verbs learning the direct object answers the question whom or what after an action verb.  They will write an essay and peer review labeling the direct objects. 

Reading 8:  The students will share their blog posts and reflections on Homelessness this week.  We will also discuss Blogging and the grading of blogs.  The students will read and analyze a short story about the relationship between a mother and daughter.  The will identify tone, or the attitude an author takes toward his or her subject.  They will work on Evaluating, Visualizing and making Critical judgments as they read. They will compare and contrast the characters in the story through a writing assignment.  Through small group discussion, they will explore whether education is the best way to prepare for their future. The students will update their blogs after the discussion.

Reading 7:  The students will work on the main elements for autobiographies this week.  We will create charts with the questions to ask yourself. They will read and analyze a story about a boy entering a new school and a new culture.  They will learn to recognize and explain how descriptions are effective.  They will also write an analysis of how the setting contributes to the story. The students will also create blogs used to discuss their reading. 

Electives:

Computers: The students will work on keyboarding this week.  They will also work on learning more in Microsoft word.

History Projects: Students are starting to present their research findings.  The students are creating online presentations of their research.

 


Week of 10/15

English 6 green/gold:  VERBS RULE: continue with verbs this week.  We will add to our notes on verbs, action verbs both physical and mental action.  As a class, we will use a picture prompt and write about the action in the picture.  The students will also create a comic strip to show mental action.  We will have a vocab test on Thursday and the new cards will be due on Monday. 

English 7 gold: We will review all parts of speech this week, with an emphasis on Verbs.  Students will write a group story paying special attention to their verb choice.  The students will also learn the rule linking verbs play.  The students will have a vocab test on Thursday with new vocab cards due on Monday.  The students will continue their blogs this week, their blog will demonstrate good verb choice.

Reading 8: The student s will continue with research this week.  Their research will be presented using Glogster.  The presentation of research will be due on Tuesday.  Their glogs will be uploaded their blog site.  The students will also do a reflection of this project as a blog assignment.  The students will use an Active Reading graphic organizer to read and analyze a short story.  They will analyze the relationship of the setting of the story to its theme.

Reading 7: Students will add Internal/ External Conflict and Foreshadowing to their notes this week. We will read a short story together to identify the conflict.  The students will be assigned to their Lit Circle and create a comparison of the character and his changes in the story. The students will read and analyze a poem about human diversity and acceptance.  They will discuss point of view in relation to a poem.

Electives:

Computers: Students will continue with their keyboarding practice this week.  The students will also experiment with presentation methods.

History Projects: Students will be completing their research and will discuss the best tools to present the research.

 

 

Week of 10/8 

English 6 Green/ Gold:

The students did a great job last week creating their voki.  The voki will be used to read the students writing. This week the students will continue working with Verbs.  The students will act out verbs and create a list of overused verbs.  The students will explore online thesaurus, dictionaries to replace the overused verbs in their own writing. The students will have a Vocab Test on Thursday. They will create their new vocab cards. The cards are due on Mondays.

English 7:

This week the students will take a test over Nouns on Tuesday.  The students will work with verbs and acting out them out.  The students continue to be excited about blogging.  There are many skills being used writing their individual blogs.  The students are writing for an authentic audience and have a purpose for it.  They are working on proofreading their blog.  The vocab test is on Thursday with their new cards due on Monday.

Reading 8:

 The students will be working on a research project this week.  The students read an essay on homelessness.  The students will develop essential questions about homelessness in different states. They will research to find the answers to their own questions and present their information to the class. 
The students will reflect on the problem of homelessness through a full class discussion.

Reading 7:

The students will start the week comparing the stories they read last week.  The students will write an essay comparing the important elements of the stories.  Plot will be the main literary element this week. We will discuss plot, learn the plot diagram, and discuss internal and external conflict.  The student will read a story, pick out the plot, and identify types of conflict.

Electives:

Computers: The students are making great gains in their keyboarding.  They will continue keyboarding lessons.

History Projects: Students are researching their individual topics. 

 
 
 
 
 10/1 update

English 6: Green and Gold

This week the students will work on Possessive Nouns.  We will finish up on Nouns and have a short quiz on Tuesday.  We will start Verbs and ACT OUT verbs to increase the understanding between action and helping verbs.  Vocabulary Test is on Thursday, with their new cards due on Monday.  We will also continue Quick Write Friday.  This week the students will also create their own Voki, to read their work.

English 7 Gold:

This week we will finish Nouns, including Possessives and Appositives.  We will have a Test on Nouns on Wednesday.  The students will have their weekly Vocabulary Test on Thursday.  The new vocabulary cards will be due on Monday.  The students have completed their first blog entry.  We will be working on good blogging and how to comment.  Our blogs are a work in progress; check it out on the following link.  All posts and comments are sent to the teacher for review before they are posted.

Reading 8 Gold: 

We will finish the Star Testing this week.  We will read a short story and work on identifying the relationship between the narrative voice and the central message of an essay.  The students will read and analyze an essay, identify and discuss stereotypes.  The students will also learn how stereotypes may lead to unfair judgments.  The students will also research and present their findings to the class. The students are also creating their own blogs; they will use their blogs to write about their reading.

Reading 7 Gold:

The students will finish Star Testing this week.  They will read and analyze the article Strong Men Weep.  They will identify the author’s purpose in writing the article. The students will also write a review of the article, giving examples from the article.  The students will also read and analyze a true story to discover the relationship between the characters, from Wait till Next Year.  The student will complete an Active Reading Log while they read.  The students will write an essay comparing the two stories as a test on Thursday.

Computers:  Students are working on Keyboarding lessons @ typingweb.com/tutor.

English Green and Gold:

This week we will continue working with nouns.  The students will work on identifying and correct usage of the following: Common/Proper, Abstract/Concrete and singular and plural nouns. We will have a vocabulary test on Thursday.  Students will create new vocabulary cards on Thursday.  The cards are due on Monday. 

English 7:

We will focus on writing this week.  We will discuss blogging and the rules for safe blogging.  Students will write their first blog posts.  The students will also work on their first Write To Learn assignment.  The students will write a narrative.  The Vocab test will be on Thursday.  They will create their new vocabulary cards on Thursday due on Monday.

Reading 8:

Students will continue working with the Elements of Literature this week.  Theme will be an important element as we read stories all about the same theme.  The students will also write a Character Analysis.  The students will start blogging this week.  They will use their blogs to write book reviews and responses throughout the year.

Reading 7:

Computers:  We will work on continue with lessons on Cyber bullying this week.  We will also start working with specific keyboarding lessons.  The students will learn about several techniques for safe searching.

Reading 7:  Students will focus on Literary Elements this week.  We will review the 5 main elements of a short story. The students will discuss themes and read several short stories with the same theme. The students will evaluate the author’s message through discussion and a writing assignment.

Reading 8:  Students will focus on Literary Elements this week.  We will review the 5 main elements of a short story. The students will read stories and examine the story to decide how the author used specific elements.  They will analyze the story through discussion and progress to writing their opinions using examples from the story.

History Projects:  The class will continue the unit on Cyber bullying this week.  The students will learn ways to protect themselves and also to prevent bullying.  The students will also work on safe searching, research tips, and how to cite their sources.

9/10 

Computers: This week the students will focus on Cybersafety. The students will: Describe positive aspects of online talking and messaging. Identify situations of flirting and chatting that become imappropriate and risky.  Understand rules for safe online messaging and feel empowered to deal with uncomfortable situations when communicating online.  The  class will also work on keyboarding weekly.

The students will also start Vocabulary this week. The students will create vocabulary cards on Thursdays. They will be due on Mondays at the begining of class. The definitions should not have the root word in them. The students will have a short quiz on Nouns on Friday.

History Projects: As this class will primarily be a research class, using their computers, we start with several lessons on Cybersafety and Cyber Bullying this week.Students in this class will finish up Cyber safety and focus on Cyber Bullying this week. Students will:

• Analyze online bullying behaviors that “cross the line

• Learn about the various ways that students can be cyberbullied, including flaming,deceiving, and harassing

• Adopt the point of view of teens that have been cyberbullied, and offer solutions
